Radicalise, a game to prevent radicalisation

Radicalise

Goal

Increase resilience against manipulation techniques that motivate, isolate and activate young people for extremist ideologies.

Intervention against radicalisation

Join the dark side! Radicalise is a serious game made by Tilt which provides a preventative vaccination against radicalisation. The game challenges players to step into the shoes of a person who recruits young people for a fictitious extremist climate organisation. The player learns how to identify, isolate and eventually activate them by using different manipulation techniques. In doing so the player experiences the effectiveness of different psychological manipulation tricks that are used to radicalise individuals, and this will make the players less receptive of being manipulated themselves.

Target audience

Radicalise focuses on the recruitment processes before radicalisation and isolation. Who is vulnerable? How are you recruited into an extremist organisation? How are you approached? With that in mind the game is appropriate for two target audiences:

  • Young adults (ages 14-18)
  • Teachers, parents, care-takers

The game was popular with students as 90.2% of the students said that they enjoyed the game as an addition to their lessons and 82.4% of the students said that they would recommend the game to someone else.

Effectiveness

The prototype of the game has been researched by the Social Decision Making Lab of the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with Nudge Lebanon and B4Development. Their research has shown (n=291) that after playing this game the participants had significantly improved their ability to (1) recognise manipulative messages and (2) identify potentially vulnerable individuals. The results of this research have been peer-reviewed and approved for publication in the academic journal Behavioural Public Policy.

Tilt conducted a successful pilot at secondary schools in the municipality of The Hague with an education package created by TerInfo. This pilot was supported by the The Hague municipality, TerInfo and Centrum 1622. Their feedback was so positive that a roll-out will continue in the region in 2023.

A lesson plan for educators was developed by Terinfo. More information about TerInfo and the lesson plan can be found here. Interested in using Radicalise? Let’s talk!

Q&A

Where can I find this learning package for teachers? When you register at TerInfo you will receive the full information package including a general handout and lesson plans.

How can I start with the lessons? As a teacher or school you can register with TerInfo and start right away! The package was developed and tested so that any high school teacher would be able to do the four classes in the program. There are two different education boxes for ages 14-15 (‘onderbouw’) and one for ages 16-18 (‘bovenbouw’) and each contains 4 lessons with a slide deck, a lesson plan and access to the game.

Do I have to pay for the lessons? For schools in the municipality of The Hague the lessons are for free and also for individual schools or teachers there is a limited amount of licenses that are currently available via TerInfo. For municipalities that want to use the radicalisation resilience package there are different options and also possibilities for adjustments in the education box.
